The Hardest Part of Fostering Isn’t What You Think

People often assume the hardest part of fostering is the beginning.

The intake.

The unknowns.

The medical issues.

The fear.

The chaos.

And yes… those things are hard.

But they’re not the hardest part.

The hardest part of fostering… is saying goodbye.

The Moment You Knew Was Coming

From the day a foster dog walks through your door, you know this isn’t forever.

You tell yourself:

“I’m just the bridge.”

“This is temporary.”

But then they settle in.

They learn your routine.

They find their spot on the couch.

They start to trust you.

And just like that… they’re not “a foster dog” anymore.

They’re yours—just a little bit.

Loving Them Like They’re Yours—Knowing They’re Not

At Lucci’s House Bully Rescue, we don’t do halfway love.

We can’t.

Dogs like Gremi the Gremlin, who needed time, patience, and consistent care just to feel safe…

Dogs like Jitterbug, who came to us carrying trauma most will never understand…

They didn’t need temporary.

They needed everything.

And that’s what our fosters give.

The Goodbye No One Prepares You For

Then comes the application.

You hope.

You worry.

You protect.

And when the right family comes along…

That’s when it hits.

You pack their things.

Their favorite toy.

Their food.

Their notes.

And then… you hand over the leash.

The Quiet After

No one talks about the silence.

The empty crate.

The missing footsteps.

The routine that suddenly changes.

You still look for them.

And for a moment… your home feels different.

Why We Do It Anyway

Because that heartbreak?

It means something.

It means that dog was loved.

It means they were safe.

It means they were ready.

And it means there is now space to save the next one.

Fostering isn’t about keeping.

It’s about letting go… so another life can be saved.

A Piece of Them Never Leaves

We still get updates.

Photos on couches.

Holiday pictures.

Stories about how they’ve settled in.

And we remember:

We were never their forever.

But we were the reason they got there.
