It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye

There’s something about losing a dog that people who haven’t experienced it often don’t fully understand.
I’ve grieved a lot of things in my life. I’ve lost people I loved. I’ve lost relationships, opportunities, and chapters of my life I never wanted to end. But if I’m being truthful, some of the deepest pain I have ever felt came from losing one of my dogs.
Maybe it’s because they are woven into every part of your daily life.
They’re there when you wake up in the morning. They follow you from room to room. They greet you like you’re the best thing that has ever happened to them, even on the days when you don’t feel like much of anything. They sit with you through heartbreak, illness, anxiety, and grief without asking for anything except to be near you.
Then one day, they’re gone.
And suddenly the silence is deafening.
You still reach for the leash. You still look toward their favorite spot on the couch. You still expect to hear their nails on the floor or feel their weight beside you in bed. Your entire routine is filled with reminders that someone is missing.
What makes it even harder is that society often doesn’t give pet loss the same grace it gives other kinds of grief.
People mean well when they say things like, “You can always get another dog,” or “At least it wasn’t a person.”
But to the person grieving, it wasn’t “just a dog.”
It was family.
It was your best friend.
It was the keeper of your secrets, your shadow, your comfort, your reason for getting out of bed on some of your darkest days.
The loss of a dog isn’t just losing an animal. It’s losing a piece of your heart that loved without conditions and was loved the same way in return.
So if you’re grieving a pet today, know this:
Your grief is real.
Your tears are valid.
Your heartbreak deserves the same compassion as any other loss.
And if you still cry months or years later, that’s okay too.
The depth of your grief is simply a reflection of the depth of your love.
And a love that pure never really leaves us.
